RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — Faith Walker, director of the Great Bend Museum in Ravenswood, has issued a challenge to those interested in local history.
“Do you think you know much about Jackson County?” she asked. “Maybe you know Ripley or Ravenswood. But what about the other parts of the county?”
The Great Bend Museum will host a Trivia Night: Jackson County History from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 19, at the Ravenswood Annex at 600 Mulberry Street.
Walker said this county has a rich history and many folks love sharing what they’ve learned. To gather the questions for this trivia event, she went to two for whom history is both a hobby and a passion.
“Everyone knows Mark McComas and his wealth of knowledge, so going to him for help was a no-brainer,” she said. “I also enlisted the help of Jim Fletcher, who used to live here and is a history buff. He follows our museum’s Facebook page, so it was easy to connect with him. He’s going to come in for the event.”
The format will be quiz-like, with questions being asked and participants writing down their answers for submission. Either teams or individuals can compete.
While the method may be easy, the questions might be challenging.
“We will cover the history of Ravenswood, Ripley, Cottageville, Silverton, Sandyville and Millwood,” Walker said. “It will include all types of historical topics, including significant people and events. Mark and Jim have been enthusiastically providing more than enough content.”
As with any trivia contest, there will be awards for the top finishers. Team winners will share any prize received.
“And, of course, we’ll have snacks,” Walker said. “This is just going to be a free event that we hope goes so well that we’ll have more in the future. It’ll be a great time to come and test your knowledge against your peers. It’ll be fun to see who has the most knowledge of Jackson County as a whole.”
The Great Bend Museum, located at Ravenswood’s Riverfront Park, is open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday
