The Ravenswood Police Department increased by one with the swearing in of Trenton Lanier at the Ravenswood City Council meeting on March 15.

Lanier thanked his family for their support and the mayor and the city police department for giving him the opportunity to serve.

The potential effect of the Great Bend Marina and Recreation Complex to the city of Ravenswood will be substantial according to an economic impact study conducted by West Virginia University at Parkersburg and D. Byers and Associates.

West Virginia Legislature passed three bills in Monday’s 4th special session agenda.

Of the three bills, Governor justice signed the economic development bill bringing a $500 million investment in renewable energy in Ravenswood.

Justice announced that (BHE) Berkshire Hathaway Energy business will buy more than 2,000 acres in Ravenswood to be developed as a renewable energy microgrid powered industrial site.

The new Ravenswood City Hall building (1 Wall St.) will debut its first art show throughout the month of March. The show will display the work of Charles Westerman, who was a Ravenswood resident in the 1970's and passed away in 1986. He made a big impact on the community with his scratchwork art pieces. Westerman's family will be attending the kickoff of the display on Sunday, March 1st, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

On Sunday, March 1st, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. stop by and check out the work of Charles Westerman and even speak with his family members.

Born in the small town of Quincy, Florida, Billy Dean started his music career at the age of eight, singing with his father’s band, the Country Rocks. After touring the Gulf Coast circuit in his late teens and early twenties, Billy’s first big break came in 1988 when he won Best Male Vocalist on Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon. His success on the show led to signing with Capitol Records and the release of his debut album Young Man in 1990. Buoyed by the singles “Only Here for a Little While” and “Somewhere in My Broken Heart,” Young Man became Billy’s first of many Gold records.

Just shy of one year ago, we walked this area to come up with our vision for this new trail located within Ravenswood's newest park, the Major Kevin Clegg Trail System. We acquired this property through a 50 year lease with the Jackson County Board of Education as many will recall. We had a touching ribbon cutting ceremony in honor of Kevin just a few short years ago.

Christmas in the Park Memorial Trees

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — It’s getting close to that time of year when trees will go up and lights will shine beautifully all around.

The City of Ravenswood, with the help of The GLOW Movement, will be sponsoring Christmas Memorial Trees as part of Christmas in the Park at Washington’s Riverfront Park.

Donetta Webb began the memorial trees in the park in 2016 to honor her father.

Join the Historic Landmark Commission for a guided tour of the Historic District.  Meet at the City Hall lobby at 1 Wall Street at 4:30pm on 9 December.  

Golf Carts (only) on this particular tour which will depart at 5pm.  Two golf carts are provided on a first come first served basis.  

Refreshments will be served in the lobby of City Hall and we will be discussing history all evening.

Santa Claus will be there too!

Washington's Riverfront Park will kick off the holiday season with a Christmas parade Friday, the 25th, at 6pm.  The parade route stretches from People's Bank on Washington Street and ends in the park.  Revelers will enjoy pictures with Santa & the Grinch.  Warm up with hot cocoa in our tent with cookies provided by WVU Medicine Jackson General Hospital.  This year, musical entertainment will be provided by the Ravenswood Middle & High School Choirs.  Special guests--the Ravenswood Senior Center Choir.

The museum's collections encompass a wide range of artifacts, documents, photographs, and oral histories that chronicle the diverse history of the area, including its Native American roots, early settlement, industry, agriculture, and social developments. Most of the collection dates to between 1850 and 1950.

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — Halloween is the time of year for spooky fun, haunted houses, corn mazes and pumpkin patches.

For Jacob and Reghan Daley, Halloween is the time to break out the scary decorations and ramp up their home for family fun for all in the community.

“It’s all him,” Reghan said.

“She’s a big help, though,” Jacob added. “Growing up, I always liked Halloween and scary movies, but our haunt started with a yard display.”

Through a variety of boards, commissions, and authorities established by the City of Ravenswood, residents can provide input on policies to help improve their local government and the entire city. We currently have seven boards, commissions, and authorities that advise the Mayor and City Council on a vast array of issues. We’d love to help you get involved.

On Oct. 20, the Community Foundation of Jackson County’s annual benefit dinner will take place at the National Guard Armory in Millwood.

Featured speaker will be Terry Bradshaw, legendary quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Help us preserve and share the stories of Jackson County by making a donation to the Great Bend Museum. Join us for Glow Walk 2022 at Washington's Riverfront Park celebrating this year's theme, Broken Crayons Still Color.  Gates open at 6:30 with activities beginning at 7.  Tonight we celebrate community, family, friends as we raise awareness of recovery and hope.

Join us February 20 at 6 pm for a talk about conservation, preservation, and taking care of our historic treasures. Jessica Keister, an art conservator with Steel City Conservation in Pittsburgh, will be coming to Ravenswood to talk about her work repairing and preserving the 1796 map in our collection. This map, created by the North American Land Company, shows all the property boundaries in the Jackson County area from that time. Many of the properties were received by veterans of the French and Indian War as payment for their service.

Out with the old: Constelium's 60-year-old mill gets $9.5 million facelift

RAVENSWOOD — When Brian McCallie's kids ask him what he does at Constellium, he tells them he puts metal through a colossal pasta press.

It's actually a cold rolling mill, and there's only one other like it in the U.S., but it's the same principle as a pasta press. As aluminum travels through the mill, it's thinned.

“2021 has been a difficult year and more than ever we want to bring some light to our community by “Lighting the Way” for Christmas, an annual Ravenswood tradition”, said Dee Scritchfield. ” Luminary bags are also a great way to remember loved ones lost by putting a name on the bag or just being a part of the beauty of Christmas by lining our streets with the candle luminaries.”  Everyone will light their candles at 6:00 pm on December 24th and transform Ravenswood into a beautiful night of light.  In the event of inclement weather the luminary will move to December 25h.

Please note as of 4 December the luminaria kits are sold out.

We've had a slight change of plans and our act this evening will be Mason Adkins--starting at 7pm in our heated tent! Sisters BBQ will be open serving sandwiches, deep fried pepperoni rolls, Monte Cristos, waffle fries, cheesesticks, deep fried green tomatoes, waffles fries, deep fried cheesecake, coffee, hot cocoa and soda!! We will see you there!

RAVENSWOOD, WV (WOWK) – April is Autism Awareness/Acceptance month and inclusivity is the foundation one Jackson County non-profit is built on.

At JCDC Woodworks in Ravenswood, every piece of furniture made by hand is unique, just like the people responsible for making them.

They handcraft coffee tables, different types of outdoor furniture, cutting boards and much more.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The 15 finalists for the West Virginia Scholar Program were announced Monday.

West Virginia MetroNews is a partner in the program, in which one person receives a four-year scholarship at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

“Talk about an academically qualified group of people,” said John Waltz, the institution’s vice president for enrollment. “From our applicants, the average GPA of the applicants for this program was a 3.9, and the average GPA of our finalists is a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale.”

Lockmasters House to be demolished soon

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — The Lockmaster’s House at Washington’s Riverfront Park has been a topic of discussion for many years.

It was built in 1918 to serve as the residence of a federal employee, the lockmaster, a person who directed the operation of a lock or canal.

The building was deeded from the United States Department of Interior to the West Virginia State Historic Preservation office in 1999 with stipulations of no leasing, selling or assigning.

She is undeniably one of the most eloquently emotive vocalists of modern times.

Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, is back in the studio with award-winning producer Richard Landis, working on a new album. It is sure to be yet another collection showcasing the rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor, that is the hallmark of Morgan’s range.

The Municipal Water Board was formed in 2023 and is responsible for the administration of its water collection and distribution system. This board is empowered to oversee various aspects including acquisition, construction, improvements, equipment, custody, administration, operation, and maintenance of waterworks within the city and potentially in other areas under its jurisdiction. Additionally, the board is authorized to employ personnel necessary for the execution of its duties and to control and supervise the collection of revenues generated by the waterworks under its purview.

On April 6, 2024 we crowned our new 2024 Ravenswood Ohio River Festival Royalty.  Our Queens court will reign over the 2024 Ravenswood Ohio River Festival and events throughout the year.  They invite everyone to join them August 2-4, 2024 at Ravenswood Riverfront Park. 

Our 2025 Pageant will be held in the Spring of 2025.  Check back in January for more details and information.  

Come see the film 100 years in the making on 7 May at the Ravenswood High School Auditorium.  The doors open at 1:30 and the movie starts at 2 pm!

It's a wonderful way to ensure your memories are safeguarded for future generations while contributing to our shared heritage. This event is FREE and open to anyone with historical Jackson County photos to share.

BHE Renewables, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy business, is developing the property into a first-of-its-kind solar energy microgrid-powered industrial site. Precision Castparts Corp. (PCC), a Berkshire Hathaway Inc. business, will be the first company to locate on the site and will develop a state-of-the-art titanium melt facility.

In January, Ravenswood’s City Maintenance Department began the process of exchanging old water meters for new meters for all City water customers.  These new meters will be “radio read” meters.  The city meter reader will simply drive by in his vehicle to get monthly usage reads. This will ensure accurate reads while streamlining the process.

Customers may experience temporary water outages for 10-15 minutes.  There have been rare underlying cases of bad valves or possible rust.  If that does occur; the maintenance department will immediately focus on the repair.

Ravenswood embraces Halloween with haunting yard decoration competition

RAVENSWOOD — Houses throughout downtown Ravenswood are draped in cobwebs and covered with zombies for Halloween. Five of them were awarded by city officials Tuesday for its annual Halloween decorations contest. 

Each house was given a plank from the city of Ravenswood with the category it won. Here are the winners. 

RAVENSWOOD — Dee Scritchfield remembers driving to an overlook and seeing Ravenswood lit up in the soft yellow glow of luminarias in the '70s. After her dad died in 2014, her family brought the tradition back to life. 

"It was something out of a postcard," she said. "It was special."

Scritchield's father, Charles Shaver, was a mentor to many children in Jackson County. After serving in the military, he spent his career in academia as a teacher, coach and administrator. He invested in the future of the county — now his family is, too.

Ravenswood's Historic Landmarks Commission has invited Meredith Dreistadt from the State Historic Preservation Office to present about the basics of the National Register, resources available to the HLC and constituents, requirements and benefits of being a Certified Local Government, and financial incentives for listed properties/resources. While the HLC is hosting this event, the Great Bend Museum is helping promote it as we are working to put our museum building on the National Register! Free and open to all interested members of the public.

RAVENSWOOD — Mountaineer Integrated Care will open a medical cannabis dispensary in Ravenswood after gaining approval last week to grow, dispense and process medical marijuana.

Although a timeline is not official, Ravenswood Mayor Josh Miller said it’s possible the dispensary could be up and running in the former City Hall building within six months.

Last year, Ravenswood City Council approved the lease to Mountaineer Integrated Care and Miller said everything is put into place for the business to use the building.

In loving memory: Christmas trees at Riverfront Park honor loved ones

RAVENSWOOD — Carla Dean's husband was a classic country boy. He loved to fish and hunt, he enjoyed being outdoors and he always took care of his family. 

His name was Glen Dean, and he passed away in 2019. Even though he isn't here, he's always around for Christmas thanks to the memorial trees at the Riverfront Park in Ravenswood.

Congressman Alex X. Mooney Announces $952,000 Grant for Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department

RAVENSWOOD – Today, Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) announced a $952,380.95 grant for the Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department from U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

RAVENSWOOD — The sixth annual Dash for Diabetes 5K Walk and Run will be held 8:30 a.m. June 11 at Riverfront Park in Ravenswood.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. for the race hosted by Coplin Health Systems and the City of Ravenswood.

The annual race promotes diabetes awareness by encouraging participants and onlookers to practice healthy eating and routine exercise. Throughout the year, Coplin hosts several community events and programs to shed light on the diabetes epidemic and diabetes prevention.

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — For several years, Ravenswood has quietly but visibly honored veterans in the days leading up to Veterans Day.

The American Veterans Shelter at Riverfront Park is the site of several lighted displays that do not depict any specific conflict or war. They simply honor America and those who have served faithfully.

For many years, Steve Bradley worked diligently to ensure that the soldiers and other figures were ready to light up on November 1 and run until Veteran’s Day.

“When we first started this concept of bringing back the idea of building a marina and creating a comprehensive recreational complex for Ravenswood; I could see the skepticism and doubt in people’s faces and rightfully so, people hear folks talking about big dreams and “game changers” all the time, but it’s action that matters at the end of the day. You have to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.
